Charleston beach shotSouth Carolina's coastal environment is a treasure trove of wildlife. You can easily spot the many creatures that call the Lowcountry's waterways, shores, maritime forests and lofty skies home. Habitats include ocean, sandy beaches, bays, estuaries, sounds, salt marshes, tidal flats, riverbeds, creek beds, sand dunes and maritime forests. A visit to the Aquarium of South Carolina is a good place to begin your families' area education. The Aquarium is focused on the State of South Carolina's habitats from the mountains to the sea.

Mother and Son looking at shell on beach A simple shelling stroll along the beach will treat you to a variety of land and sky wildlife. There are over 30 varieties of shells found right on Charleston's beaches. Challenge your girls to find an 'Angel Wing' or 'Kitten's Paw' and your boys to discover a 'Mud Snail' or 'Worm Shell'. All children squeal with delight upon discovery of a Starfish, Sand Dollar or Crab. And Crustaceans? You can find over 12 varieties of Crabs on the beach. Most fun is chasing 'Ghost Crabs' with flashlights during a night beach walk. Also, don't miss trying the tasty Blue Crab at nearby eateries.

Bird walking along shorelineAvian enthusiasts will not be disappointed. Birds such as Black Skimmers, Brown Pelican, Cormorants, Gulls, Mallard Duck, Osprey, Oystercatcher, Ruddy Turnstone, Sanderling, Terns and Willet are likely to enhance your stay. A flock of Brown Pelican may accompany you along the way. Feeding only on marine fish they are never far from the ocean.
